The study focused on individuals both with and without atrial fibrillation (AFib), a prevalent heart condition marked by an irregular heartbeat. Over a span of approximately 13.5 years, researchers monitored participants to understand the correlation between varying physical activity levels and their effects on stroke incidence and overall mortality.
The results indicate that even minimal physical activity could yield significant health advantages. Participants who engaged in physical activities had up to a 19% lower risk of experiencing a stroke and up to a 22% reduced risk of dying from any cause compared to those who were less active. This suggests that incorporating some level of physical activity into one’s routine is beneficial for health and longevity.
People with atrial fibrillation appeared to particularly benefit from being more active. The study observed that higher activity levels were linked to increased life expectancy for those with AFib. Depending on their activity, individuals with AFib were projected to gain between 0.50 and 1.15 extra years. Those with minimal activity gained about 0.50 years, while moderate activity added approximately 0.66 years, and those engaging in high activity could see up to 1.15 additional years of life. Given that atrial fibrillation heightens the risk of blood clots and strokes, maintaining cardiovascular health is crucial for those affected by this condition.
