South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has revealed that following a potential agreement with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to shift his focus towards North Korea. After discussions with Trump at the G7 summit held in France, Lee indicated that the U.S. president believes the moment has come to tackle the North Korean issue. Lee also highlighted that the effectiveness of sanctions on Pyongyang, aimed at curbing its nuclear weapons program, has diminished.
Lee pointed out that North Korea’s increasing military collaboration with Russia, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, has weakened the impact of these international sanctions. He remarked that even limited assistance from Russia offers North Korea substantial support, reducing the pressure of sanctions meant to deter its nuclear ambitions.
Speculation regarding renewed diplomatic efforts with Pyongyang has intensified after President Trump posted a photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, reminiscent of their groundbreaking 2018 summit in Singapore. This gesture has fueled discussions about the possibility of re-engaging with North Korea diplomatically.
North Korea remains a significant security concern in East Asia due to its persistent development of nuclear weapons. The Korean Peninsula is still technically in a state of war since the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, concluded with an armistice and not a formal peace treaty.
