A new row over tariffs and rare earth minerals will dominate the talks between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in South Korea this Thursday.
The two leaders will meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit. From Tokyo, Trump was confident, saying, “I think it’s going to work out very well, actually.”
The row began when China imposed rare earth controls, and the US retaliated with a 100% tariff threat, effective November 1.
This new flare-up, which also includes US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has ended a recent period of calm.
Trump called the “big meeting” fantastic and “great for everybody.”
“I have a lot to talk about with President Xi,” Trump added, acknowledging the weight of the issues. “The Chinese leader also has a lot to talk about with us.”
