President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about the current ceasefire with Iran, labeling it as being on “life support.” In response to the ongoing Iranian blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, he is contemplating the reinitiation of U.S. Navy military escorts for ships passing through this critical maritime passage.
Trump criticized Iran’s peace proposals, dismissing them as “stupid,” and rejected the notion that he is facing internal pressure to negotiate a deal. Reflecting on the ceasefire that has been in place since April 7, Trump remarked, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He compared the situation to a dire medical prognosis, suggesting the ceasefire’s viability is severely compromised.
Last week, the United States presented a set of conditions to Iran aimed at de-escalating tensions, primarily focusing on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Iran’s counter-proposals, submitted over the weekend, were summarily rejected by Trump. Initially, Trump had halted “Project Freedom,” a mission to escort oil tankers through the strait, after a brief two-day operation. This pause was intended to allow Iran time to consider his peace proposals. Additionally, Saudi Arabia had voiced opposition to the plan, refusing to permit its airspace or bases to be used in what it deemed an escalatory move.
The situation intensified as oil prices surged following Iran’s declaration that it would not engage in further negotiations to lift the blockade unless its conditions were met. These conditions include the cessation of conflict on all fronts, the lifting of sanctions, the release of frozen funds, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, articulated Iran’s position, stating, “As long as the war on all fronts is not over, sanctions are not lifted, blocked funds are not released, war damages are not compensated and Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz not recognised, there will be no other negotiations.”
